Other book turned movie, Gone Girl was recently released on
October 3rd, 2014. David Fincher is the director for this movie, so
you can trust that it will stay true to the book as much as possible. Other movie
that is well known by David Fincher is, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, The
Social Network, Zodiac, Se7en and Fight Club. Majority of the movie that I just
listed was a book, with the exception of Se7en where an author based his book
on the movie.
So we can establish that David Fincher likes to do a movie
adaptation from the book, but how did he do with Gone Girl? Good question. I
actually read the book before watching the movie, to get the full experience of
‘The book was better than the movie’. Sad to say, I couldn’t say that with this
movie.
This movie and book is very unexpected, it’s not cliché or
necessary a good ending, it leaves audiences hanging and anticipate what might
happen in the future.
The style that the author uses to narrate the book, and how
David narrates the movie is very different from each other. In the book, every
chapter or every other chapter, the book tells story from the husband’s (Nick
Dunne) point of view or the wife’s (Amy Dunne) point of view. Since the
book/movie is about finding potential kidnapped wife, the book alternate
between Nick’s current thought process, while Amy give us a look in the past
with dairy format. It was hard for me to get use to this writing style, but
very interesting nonetheless.
However, half of the movie is through Nick’s point of view before it switches to Amy, and towards the end, combine both points of view (it was interesting to see how they react to each other at the end).
I think the movie have more room for audiences to think how
character feels about the situation. The book does give more of their
perspective on the situation, and reasons why they do this and not that. Both
movie and book will give you different experience on the ending.
Gone Girl is not the only book Gillian Flynn has written.
The other books are Dark places and Sharp Objects. Dark Places also got adapted
into a movie; it was weird to not see any media talking about this movie at
all. You would think that there would be some sort of advertisement by now.
